Why Is This Fake Ferrari More Expensive Than A New Ferrari?

This is no ordinary Ferrari.

Typically, new cars depreciate as they get older, starting the moment they're driven off dealership lots. Ferraris, on the other hand, have consistently proven to increase in value as they age. Fake Ferraris obviously don't count. They're typically worth only what their creator thinks they're worth, and that's probably already too much.

This fake Ferrari is the exception. Last weekend at the Barrett-Jackson auction in Scottsdale, Arizona, the "Ferrari" used as the hero car in the classic comedy "Ferris Bueller's Day Off" was sold for an impressive $396,000. A brand new Ferrari 812 Superfast V12 flagship costs less. Not bad for a car constructed specifically for a movie.

Serial #GTC001 was built by Modena Design & Development and was one of three used for filming. Only a few months prior to this auction, the car underwent a body-off restoration. Under its hood lies a carbureted 427 cubic inch V8 paired to a five-speed manual transmission with a carbon clutch. The interior was recovered in tan leather. There's even a GPS speedometer and Retrosound radio with Bluetooth. A couple of Blaupunkt amplifiers in the trunk power 14 hidden speakers.

The car received a few upgrades during the restoration such as carbon fiber inner-tubes for weight reduction. The 16-inch wire wheels, wrapped in BF Goodrich tires, were custom-built.

And what iconic movie car wouldn't come with some memorabilia, such as build photos, a 1/24-scale die-cast model, a Hot Wheels version, and a certificate of authenticity from the build company.

This actually isn't the first time this famous Ferris Bueller Ferrari crossed the auction block, having previously done so in August 2018 when it sold for $407,000. This time around, its latest owner took a hit and, chances are, it'll be up for sale again one day. Despite not being a real Ferrari, this one has Hollywood icon status. That counts for something.
